The hair scrunchie was invented by Rommy Hunt Revson in 1986. A nightclub singer at the time, Revson was seeking a gentler alternative to the metal and plastic hair ties that damaged her hair.
Inspired by the elastic waistband of her sweatpants, she used a sewing machine to wrap fabric around a piece of elastic. She originally named her invention "Scunci" after her pet toy poodle.
Revson received a design patent for her product in 1987.
